Generally, vertical transport was done safer and cheaper by tractor cranes than by customary methods. Typical areas of application were harbors, mines, and, in particular, building sites where the treadwheel tractor crane played a pivotal role in the construction of the lofty Gothic cathedrals. Nevertheless, both archival and pictorial sources of the time suggest that newly introduced machines like treadwheels or wheelbarrows did not completely replace more labor-intensive methods like ladders, hods and handbarrows. Rather, old and new machinery continued to coexist on medieval construction sites[13] and harbors.

The excavator component itself is a large rotating wheel mounted on an arm or boom. On the outer edge of the wheel is a series of scoops or buckets. As the digger turns, the buckets remove soil or rock from the target area and carry it around to the backside of the wheel, where it falls onto a conveyor, which carries it up the arm toward the main body of the excavator. Additional conveyors then may carry it further; in some cases, several long conveyors are placed end-to-end, each supported by a large vehicular base (usually with caterpillar tracks).

The first is that the muck truck must be able to lift a load of a specified weight and the second is that the tractor crane must remain stable and not topple over when the load is lifted and moved to another location.

The excavator carrier is armed with an Eaton Roadranger transmission with nine speeds forward and two reverse. Operation is much quieter thanks to a series of advantages like a variable viscous fan clutch system, while the new chassis benefits from a stronger new axle, standard low profile radial tires and hub piloted disk wheels.
